Summary The title of our story is “Spelling Bee” by Laurene Chambers Chinn. This story had two main characters Ellen and Ellen’s mother. Ellen's trait that best describes her is depressed. Ellen is depressed because her mother doesn’t speak English and wants her to go to a spelling bee her school planned. In the text, Ellen said “We are supposed to have dinner at the hotel, Mama,” but her mom felt embarrassed because of her Cantonese ancient. Ellen took it hard and tries to spell a word wrong. This is why Ellen is so depressed.

Character Analysis The word that best describes Ellen’s mom is brave. We chose that because Mama faces her fears. In the story it says, “The other was utterly familiar, yet in the hat and dress, utterly strange, they went to sit beside Henry, and Mama was smiling at Ellen on stage.” Ellen had lived all her life with that loving smile. It also says, “Mama found the courage enough to become American.” If mama wasn’t brave, she wouldn’t want to spelling bee and she wouldn’t become American. So in conclusion, Mama is really brave and she faced her biggest fear, which was going outside and talking English.
